  5. Heavy goods transport for the marble and ceramics industry

Heavy goods transport in the natural stone and ceramics sectors involves marble and granite slabs, rough stone blocks, crates of porcelain stoneware, and premium ceramics. Their weight and fragility call for specialist equipment and procedures that go well beyond those used for standard freight. The process does not begin when a loaded lorry or container leaves the warehouse: that is simply the final stage. A successful shipment depends on how the goods have been stored, lifted, packed and secured before dispatch.

In this guide, we at Logistock Italia explain how to prepare a heavy load for shipment, drawing on the procedures and equipment we use every day in our warehouses.

What does heavy goods transport involve in the natural stone and ceramics industries?

Heavy goods are shipments whose weight and size require specialist lifting equipment and careful planning. A single marble block can weigh several tonnes, while one slab can weigh several hundred kilograms. Crates of porcelain stoneware and premium ceramics present an additional challenge, combining considerable weight with fragility. Even an incorrectly positioned support can cause an entire bundle of slabs to crack.

Heavy goods transport therefore involves much more than moving cargo by road, sea or rail. It encompasses several stages: storage, handling, packaging, loading and securing the cargo. The services offered vary between logistics providers. Some manage the entire journey, while others specialise in pre-shipment logistics, preparing goods to remain secure throughout transit. At Logistock Italia, we focus on this second area, taking care to prepare every consignment so that it can reach its destination undamaged.

Handling and storage of heavy goods before dispatch

Two stages of preparing heavy goods for transport can seriously affect their condition if they are not managed correctly: lifting, which requires suitable equipment, and warehouse storage. Slabs, stone blocks, and crates of ceramics are particularly vulnerable to mistakes during either stage.

What equipment is needed to move heavy loads?

Handling slabs and blocks requires heavy-duty lifting equipment, including overhead travelling cranes and gantry cranes, capable of moving loads weighing several hundred kilograms or more. These are supported by forklift trucks and suitable lifting attachments that distribute the weight evenly without marking the material’s surface.

Across our two warehouses, which provide more than 10,000 m² of indoor and outdoor space, we operate three overhead travelling cranes and three gantry cranes with different lifting capacities to accommodate various types of cargo. Our goods’ loading and unloading service covers both incoming deliveries and the preparation of goods for dispatch by lorry or container.

Why does storage matter for transport safety?

Every time goods are moved, there is another opportunity for damage. That is why we aim to minimise unnecessary handling by assigning each consignment a dedicated storage location, where it remains until it is ready for dispatch.

Through our warehousing and storage service, slabs and other materials are kept in purpose-equipped facilities designed to protect them, without unnecessary intermediate transfers. For international shipments, we also provide a Type C customs warehouse, where non-Union goods can remain under customs control until they are cleared.

How are heavy goods packed and secured for transport?

For heavy goods transport, bespoke packaging begins with a careful assessment of the material, its dimensions, weight, and fragility. We manufacture wooden slab-bundling frames using fumigated timber that complies with ISPM 15 requirements for international shipments. These are available in standard configurations or with additional protection, including longer boards, double cross-members, and end protectors, with or without side panels.

When planning a shipment, we recommend the most suitable packaging and calculate the maximum quantity that can safely be loaded onto a lorry or into a container. This helps keep shipping costs down without compromising safety. For container shipments, our two certified weighing systems allow us to provide the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) declaration required before a container can be loaded onto a vessel.

As a final precaution, we fit impact and tip-over indicators to transport units. These indicators turn red if the cargo is tilted beyond a set limit or overturned, without being triggered by normal handling. Should an incident occur, they can help establish where and when the problem arose.

What to look for in a heavy goods logistics partner

Before entrusting heavy goods to a logistics provider, there are several important factors to consider. The equipment must have sufficient lifting capacity for the loads involved, and the team should have hands-on experience handling stone slabs, blocks, and crates of ceramic products. Equally important is traceability at every stage, supported by documentation and photographs of the operations carried out. Customer support also matters, particularly for exporters. At Logistock Italia, we can assist customers in both English and German, helping to facilitate communication with international partners. Appropriate liability insurance covering the logistics activities performed is another essential consideration.

At Logistock Italia, we share documentation and photographs of loading operations in real time. We also hold third-party liability insurance covering our logistics activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which documents are required to ship heavy goods?

Typically, you will need a transport document, an invoice, and a packing list. Export shipments also require customs documentation, along with a CMR consignment note for international road transport. For container shipments, a VGM declaration is also necessary. The exact documentation depends on the destination.

When is a VGM required for a container carrying heavy goods?

A VGM is required for every packed container being shipped by sea. VGM stands for Verified Gross Mass and must be declared before the container is loaded onto a vessel. We have two certified weighing systems and can issue the VGM declaration directly.

When is groupage a cost-effective option for heavy goods?

Groupage is a cost-effective choice when a consignment is too small to fill an entire lorry or container. By consolidating smaller and larger consignments in the same vehicle or container, it makes better use of available space and helps reduce shipping costs.

Does Logistock Italia also provide transport services?

We focus on pre-shipment logistics, including storage, handling, packaging, and loading. The transport itself is carried out by a carrier, which may be our sister company, Signoretto Trasporti, a specialist in transporting slabs and blocks.
